Mount Saviour Monastery

September 2003
News:
Br. Adelard & Joseph On September 5th, we received the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Frank Griswold, for his annual visit of rest and retreat.  His many years of relationship with the monastery continue to mark his concern for ecumenism in spite of his important role.  After the first vespers of the feast of the Exultation of the Cross, we received into the novitiate Br. Adélard (Christopher) Kosciuk and Br. Joseph Amendola.  Part of the ritual is the washing by the superior; a sign of hospitality that is found in the Rule of St. Benedict.  Br. Adélard was born and raised in MIller Place, Long Island, and is the youngest of 5 brothers.  He received his B.A. in philosophy at St. Bonaventure University and his M.A. at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.  He was a novice with the Marist Fathers before coming to Mount Saviour.  Br. Joseph is from Montrose, PA and has managed different businesses and sales representation.      On Sunday, Sept. 21st., the community was invited by Rick  and Mary Canali, owners of the Palms Restaurant for a special dinner.  This unusual outing was a good way to relax and enjoy the delicacies of Italian cuisine.  On Sept. 28th, Fr. Jerome Hall, S.J. was the guest speaker for the first annual Fr. Damasus Winzen Memorial Lecture.  With the topic " The Presence of Christ in Worship", he presented his first impressions at Mount Saviour.  Being a native of Elmira,  he heard Fr. Damasus at the liturgy and he became interested in the theology of Dom Odo Casel on the "mysterium theory".  His talk will be published in a coming book commemorating the 50th anniversary of Mount Saviour.
