Mount Saviour Monastery
September 2014
News:
The apple harvest used to be a hectic activity but , this year, only
half a dozen trees are loaded with apples. When all the apples are
picked, we will make cider to be used during the year. The farm had
a pen session that lasts 3 days to drench , to trim the feet, to color
code them according to bloodlines and to inspect them from head to
toe. Four people were involved for that task. During the year,
the community had group discussions with a facilitator, Sandy Shuman,
and we revised our Customary (book of customs for the monks of Mount Saviour).
For the last few months, a steering committee was formed with 4 lay members:
Chuck Vail, Bob Sell, Jim Mullen and Tony Compese to work on projects
to bring an income and offer a variety of works for the monks. Since
2 of the lay members are professors at Elmira College, they can involve
students for the feasibility study. Fr. Joseph Gabriel, Bros.
Bruno and Pierre and Luke represent the community. The monastery
is closer to use solar energy. We signed a letter of intent with
a company that arranges to install and own on our property a solar
system. We buy the electricity from them at a lower rate. Presently,
we spend an average of $1,200 a month for electricity. Fr. Joseph
Gabriel went to New Mexico to preach a retreat for the Sisters at Our
Lady of the Desert Monastery.
