Mount Saviour Monastery

May 2017
Fr. Martin ShannonNews: On May 7, Fr. Martin Shannon of the Community of Jesus, a good friend of the monastery, presented a well received talk for this year’s edition of the Annual Fr. Damasus Winzen Memorial Lecture. Fr. Martin recounted the history behind the ecumenical vision of Fr. Damasus and its continuance into the present as an important part of the patrimony and charism of Mount Saviour. He also recounted his first encounter with our Fr. Martin who had gone to his guest room that morning because he thought Fr. Shannon would want to watch what at the moment was dominating the airwaves. The date: Sept. 11, 2001. On May 12 we received word that Br. Pierre’s older sister, Pierrette, had died. Please remember her in your prayer. Starting mid-month, St. Peter’s barn, the one with the cross that dates back to the 1800’s, began receiving a facelift. New siding was put on two of the walls and one of them had to be firmed up so that it can remain an iconic building for a bit longer. Diaconate candidates from the Archdiocese of New York arrived on the 20th to spend five days on retreat before their scheduled ordination on June 17.  As usual, the yearly sheep shearing took place over the Memorial Day Weekend which has left the sheep looking pretty “cool.” Our community is grateful for all who helped make the event fun and successful and to run so smoothly this year.
