Mount Saviour Monastery
May 2001
The Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus:
On Sunday, May 6th, a concert conducted by Sr. Virginia Hogan ssj,
was presented at the Clemens Center
in Elmira in honor of our 50th anniversary. The monks sang the office
of None before the concert. Sr. Virginia comes periodically from
Rochester NY to give us some advice to improve our singing. She founded
the orchestra 25 years ago and presented a variety of musical pieces.
The finale was the TE DEUM by Dvorak. On October 7th, the choral
group Amor Artis, conducted by Johannes Somary will perform in the
same hall as part of this year celebration.
News:
The local newspaper, the Star-Gazette, featured a short article on
our black sheep and Br. Pierre
for the first Sunday in May, the Good Shepherd Sunday. The candidates
for the diaconate from the New York diocese were here for their retreat
before their ordination. On May 13th, Fr. Martin went to Regina
Laudis for the blessing of the new Abbess; Fr. Damasus was their chaplain
in the late 1940s. We sent our our Dedication
Day letter which is at the same time our annual appeal stating the
future projects. On May 26th, many families were here for the shearing
session. With 2 shearers at work and the many volunteers, 171 sheep
were done between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
