January 2018
News:
The community celebrated New Year's Eve in grand monastic style. We
went to bed after Compline and woke at our usual time of 4:25AM for Vigils
to begin the New Year. Epiphany, on the 6th, was a bit more celebratory.
The brothers accepted an invitation from our guest mistress Eve, at St.
Gertrude's, to join her for a festive meal. Not only was the food great;
we were given the day off from cooking and washing dishes! On the 11th,
Br. Justin returned to his hometown of Detroit to be with his family for
the funeral of his brother Leonard. Five of the brothers went to visit
Br. Stephen at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Rochester the same
day, where each brother had a few minutes apiece with him. The 12th brought
the knitter's group for their yearly January gathering here and ushered
in a five- inch snowstorm, an infrequent occurrence thus far this winter.
On the 17th, the feast day of St. Anthony, the community had a festive
recreation with Br. Antonio on his name's day. It was Scranton or bust
on the 18th, or rather the bust to Scranton, as Br. Savio's large wooden
carved bust of Christ was taken away to their Diocesan Pastoral Center.
Br. Stephen Galban died peacefully, and without pain, in his sleep in the
early morning hours of the 20th. The funeral Mass was celebrated with simplicity,
as he would have liked it, on the 23rd. After 58 years among us he will
be greatly missed. Because the ground is frozen solid, burial will be at
a date yet to be determined. The plan is let people know the actual date
far enough in advance so they can make plans to be at the interment.
COMING EVENTS: FEBRUARY 17: Grammy Award Winning Flutist Rhonda Larson
performance in the Chapel from 7-8pm. Donations will benefit our local
Catholic Charities.
