Mount Saviour Monastery
June 2018
News:
Abbot Anselm Atkinson from Pluscarden Abbey in Scotland and Father
Gregory Phillips from Saint Mary's Monastery in Petersham, Massachusetts,
arrived on the 5th. They were here to conduct the every three-year
canonical visitation of our monastery. A visitation is a moment of fraternal
examination and encouragement when abbots and monks from other houses come
to examine the life of a particular monastery. It seems we passed the 'examination'
as the final report stated the community is united and at peace. Our visitors
returned to their home monasteries on the 9th.
On the 12t h Brother Bruno began mowing our farm fields. First those
fields left un-mowed from last year, where the invasive and unwanted multi-flora
rose bushes had begun to establish a foothold. Also cut back was the tall
growth in the drainage diversion ditches in an effort to prevent wily coyotes
from using their cover for sneak attacks on the sheep.
Our Chaplin Father Don had a close encounter with a black bear at his
quarters as it passed through the property on the 13th. Neither took the
opportunity to get to know one other better. On the 19th Brothers Pierre
and Luke visited Father James Cronen at the Sisters of St. Joseph's Motherhouse
in Rochester on his 91st birthday. Father James, in good spirits and appetite,
easily polished off a piece of one of two birthday cakes.
A new face appeared in choir on the 29th. Br. John of the Cross was
in the same class as Br. Dominic Savio at the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady
of Divine Grace in Vietnam. You will catch sight of him when he is not
at Christ the King Seminary near Buffalo. Please remember him in prayer
as he embarks on his studies.
