Mount Saviour Monastery (October 2018)
Mount Saviour Monastery
October 2018
News:
The month began with the Novices of the Sisters of Saint Joseph here
on retreat. Father Michael Perry, a retired priest from Brooklyn and long-time
friend of the monastery, also arrived to be here for the month. That gave
our regular Chaplain, Father Don, the opportunity for time away. Br. Pierre
returned from his home visit in Canada on the 6th in time to join the festive
community celebration of Br. Bruno's name day. The yearly Oblate retreat
took place from the 12th-14th. A talk was presented by Brothers Pierre
and Bruno on an overview of Father Martin's years as superior. Br. Gabriel
gave the group an architecture and art tour of the monastery. The group,
in addition, had meetings to discuss questions pertinent to Oblates in
today's world. During the retreat Peter Robinson and Martha Karchner joined
our family of Oblates.
Father Gregory from Farnborough Abbey, not far from London, arrived
for his first visit to Mount Saviour on the 15th. His luggage had to be
deftly positioned between over 6,000 copies of our latest Chronicle which
had just been picked up from the printers. If anyone would like to be added
to our mailing list please let us know. With the temperature suddenly turning
more autumn like our heating system was put into action. The more frigid
weather brought our first dusting of snow on the 18th. That was also Br.
Luke's name day which was celebrated that evening.
Dr. Anthony Cernera gave a talk on Refugees and Migrants on the 21st
as part of the Friends of Mount Saviour Lecture Series. He recommended
two books on the subject: Rescue by David Milebrand and Pope Francis: A
Stranger and You Welcomed Me. Also mentioned was a new website: rmenetwork.org.
On the same day an Observer move into the monastery to test his vocation
with us for the next month. Please remember Joseph in prayer. On the 27th
William Moschuk from Canada became the third person to make their final
oblation this month. Father Michael Perry gave an informative talk on the
28th about his experience in the Ukraine this summer. A two-day sheep 'pen
session' on October 29 and 30 concluded with the shepherd determining which
sheep would stay with us through the winter and would go to auction. Those
staying were sent out the left gate and those not so lucky were sent out
the right gate. Sound somewhat familiar'
