News:
August
6, the Feast Day of the Transfiguration, is the Titular Feast Day of Mount
Saviour. It is the particular mystery to which we are, by name, attached.
This year we had the joy of hosting four of our brother monks from Weston,
Vermont, who were able to join us for our celebration. During their brief
stay we reconnected with the roots of both communities. Our founders, Fr.
Damasus and Fr. Leo, arrived in America together in 1938. Br. John of Weston
who turns 95 this month and our Br. Gabriel, were in the same novitiate
class at Mount Saviour in the late 50's. Together we recounted our common
ties throughout the years and even listened to a 35-minute talk given by
Fr. Leo to the monks of Mount Saviour in 1958. Some of the Weston monks
had never heard his voice before!
Another day of celebration was on the 11th. Our annual Dedication Day
celebrates the combined efforts of the monks with the wider community with
special thanks to God who brings it all about. Rhonda Larson, a Grammy
Award winning artist, performed a heartfelt musical program in our chapel
to an appreciative audience to conclude a joyful day.
Chester, our Observer from the Philippines, concluded his one month
stay with us and returned home on the 13th. He has expressed his desire
to return to begin postulancy.
Between the 17th '21st a Memorial Wall for our deceased brethren was
installed in the crypt. The panels were designed by Connie Zehr, a world
renowned artist whose usual medium is sand and glass. The panels are specially
designed to reflect natural light that comes in through the stained glass
windows together with light from the vigil candles placed around the statue
of the Virgin Mary. Some work remains on the project but the panels are
presently in place.
Very suddenly a name needed to be added to those panels. Fr. James Cronen,
92, died on the 24th. He had been receiving care at the Sisters of St.
Joseph Motherhouse in Rochester the past three years. His health had been
stable until he contracted severe pneumonia in both lungs about one week
before his death and became unresponsive. The requiem Mass and burial were
on the 31st. The obituary for Brother James can be found on our homepage.
