Mount Saviour Monastery
October 2019
News:
The monastery has enjoyed a long acquaintance with Sister Mary Donald
Corcoran OSB from Transfiguration Monastery. Guests and monks were once
again treated to another of her presentations entitled 'Benedictine Way
to Wisdom and Compassion' in St. Joseph's lounge on the 6th. The monastery
celebrated the solemnity of the 40th anniversary of the Dedication of our
chapel on the 11th. That event officially occurred on October 11, 1979.
The Dedication was one of the first official acts of our then new Bishop
Matthew Clark.
With the days growing increasingly cooler our boilers were fired up
on the 12th for the first time this season. Our yearly edition of the Chronicle
was delivered to the printers on the 17th. We anticipate it will be mailed
out next month. Oblates from Canada to Texas made a pilgrimage to the monastery
for retreat which took place from the 17th until the 20th. The many smiling
faces in the photo reflect the outcome.
It was Brother Luke's names' day on the 18th. Brothers joined him for
recreation in the infirmary area. On the 21st Brother Luke encountered
a speed bump on his road to recovery which required hospitalization until
his return on the 28th. His infections were cleared up as he continues
on the road to full recovery from major surgery.
The
killing frosts of October brought our growing season to an end. This year
the brothers and guests were the recipients of bountiful produce from the
garden, especially heirloom tomatoes, compliments of Brother Thomas and
helpers. At the end of the month Brother Michael and helpers were still
busy making sweet cider from an abundant apple harvest. After the cider
is pressed it is frozen then thawed out as needed to be served at meals
year round.
Coming Events:
November 2: After Mass the newly installed Memorial Plaque in the crypt
for our deceased brothers will be blessed.
