October 2021
News:
The first of the month ushered in our first temperature dip into the
30's this fall. Consequently, the brothers heard the all familiar sound
of our heating system in use once again. Students from Nazareth College
in Rochester braved the chilly weather for a retreat weekend and were greeted
with the muted colors of this year's changing leaves.
Brother
(Deacon) Dominic Savio was back with us on the 7th for an extended visit
until the 21st. His superior, Father Thaddeus from California, also joined
us for the final few days of his visit. Their picture is taken by all that
remains of the twelve-foot statue of Saint Benedict formerly on the lawn
of Saint Joseph's Guest House. Carpenter ants and weather took their toll
on Brother Savio's statue through the years. The bust is currently displayed
indoors in our Link area near the refectory entrance.
The first wave of geese headed south was seen on the 9th. On the 10th
Nicole Steward was received by Brother Gabriel as an Oblate. The 11th was
a solemnity commemorating the Dedication of our Chapel which is also the
59th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II.
On the 15th Brother Michael and helpers began pressing cider from our
abundant harvest of apples this year. Over 300 gallons were produced. The
cider is served at meals and is kept frozen until use.

The 25th and 26th were all-day pen sessions with all the sheep. It is
sort of like their annual physical where each one is given a thorough going-over.
Sheep are also sorted so that Brother Bruno can begin the multiple trips
needed to transport some of them to auction next month. Also on the 25th
Robert, from the Bronx, began a 30 day Observership. During that time he
will live, work and pray with the brothers. Please remember Robert and
his discernment in prayer.
